The Supanews Story
Supanews founder, Adrian Gaskin, has been involved in newsagencies for over 35 years and from his experience, passion and drive, Supanews has grown to over 50 stores across four states and territories with an annual turnover in excess of $140 million.
The first Supanews store was opened in 1992 in Aspley, Queensland. Adrian took over an existing newsagency, increased its size, and range and converted it into the first 24 hour newsagency in Australia. The success of this business allowed him to open more stores and he began to concentrate his efforts on the Brisbane CBD and then major shopping complexes. A market leader, Supanews soon grew to become the largest privately owned newsagency chain in Australia
In late 2004, Supanews broke new ground by launching the first ever full business format franchise system in the industry. Prior to the launch of Supanews there had only been buying groups and banner groups (e.g. Newspower and Nextra) operating in the newsagency industry. Supanews identified that a strong business model franchise was the best way to simplify, strengthen and make the newsagency model more profitable for the owner.
Supanews’ strong brand, store design and retail principles have ensured that the Supanews business is the most compliant brand of newsagencies in Australia. Based on the strengths of the Supanews model, the systems and procedures developed, the franchise was rapidly accepted by suppliers and prospective franchisees as a strong business model. Supanews now has 36 franchises from a total of 51 stores. Supanews intends to maintain its rapid growth through 2010.

The Supanews Difference
Supanews has achieved its success by being a “best practice” retailer. Through hard work, high energy and a constant process of innovation, Supanews has developed a profitable business model at the forefront of the newsagency industry. As Australia’s premier newsagency retailer, Supanews stores differentiate themselves from other newsagencies in the following ways. These differences have established Supanews as a market leader; a destination retailer capable of generating retail excitement and substantial sales.
-
Supanews positions itself as a specialist retailer by having the range and expertise necessary for customers to view us as a destination for the key categories of magazines, greeting cards and stationery.
-
Supanews stores are retail only, meaning no home deliveries and no 4:00AM starts!
-
Our 100% compliance model allows us to leverage better deals from suppliers.
-
Our stores are spacious, easy to navigate, bright and clean, offering a true customer-centric shopping experience.
-
The strong Supanews brand includes a uniform corporate image, store layout and national marketing initiatives, communicating the high quality of our customer offer.
Supanews leverages its customer driving products like magazines and lotteries to drive high profit product sales like greeting cards, stationery and impulse lines.
