The Gravesend area is located 55 kilometres from Moree which is a large town, and 25 kilometres from two smaller towns Warialda and Pallamallawa. Gravesend is known for farming, mainly wheat and other grains and cattle. There is some sheep farming as well. The town has a strong cricket club and pony club, also a good fishing club. It is on the rodeo circuit and has a well-attended rodeo each February. (And, there is, of course a pub! What town would be without one?)

The general store is not presently operating and as a result papers, bread, milk etc are sold through the Post Office until such time as it reopens.
