DOGS CAMP OUT FOR FUNDRAISING VENTURE

 

Last year’s inaugural Doggy Fantastic Camping weekend, a joint fundraising venture by Variety Queensland, Aussie Pooch Mobile and Craig A Murray Specialist Dog Trainers, was a resounding success, raising over $3000 for Harry, the little pound puppy being trained as an assistance for 3-year-old Reilly Paterson, who suffers from autism. And since Harry has gone to live with Reilly, it’s been a success story all round.

“Harry has truly changed our lives. He’s like a ray of sunshine in our home. Managing Reilly in the community has become easier, his sleep has dramatically improved and he’s starting to understand and communicate with us as well as strangers he meets thanks to Harry. We thank everyone involved, every day for giving us Harry,’ says Reilly’s mum, Linda Paterson.

And now it’s time to start fundraising again, this time for 6-year-old Jacob Johnson who was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder with Pervasive Developmental Delays (PDD) in May 2007.

“It was a shock for the whole family when Jacob was diagnosed with Autism,” says Jan Johnson, Jacob’s Grandmother. “But we were determined we would do everything possible to help him. So Jacob, his mother Deb Johnson (my daughter), her partner Andrew and my husband Paul Johnson and myself all live in the same house, and all of us are actively involved in helping Jacob secure a well adjusted childhood.

“Jacob is at the higher end of the spectrum with signs of high intelligence and since his diagnosis he has worked with speech therapists and an occupational therapist and now is still working with a physiotherapist.  At present he is attending Mt Gravatt State School and is under review by the school’s speech therapist and occupational therapist. 

“ASD affects Jacob in a number of areas – limited eye contact, social communication with his peers, meltdowns, obsessions and inability to concentrate and maintain focus on tasks that are outside his obsessions. We know an assistance dog would be very beneficial in many of these areas if specially trained to intervene when necessary to reward, to distract and soothe and to help in conversing with peers, and are therefore grateful that Variety Queensland, Aussie Pooch Mobile and Craig & Tracey Murray are making this possible.”

 

So mark this date in your diary – your pooch will love you for it and you’ll be helping raising much needed funds for Jacob.

WA MYOB FRANCHISING AWARDS

Small Business champions fly in the face of the economic downturn

2009 has been a year of remarkable achievement for the WA franchise sector as it continues to ride the bumps of the economic downturn. 

This resilience and achievement was celebrated on Friday night as the WA winners for the MYOB Excellence in Franchising Awards were announced to a packed house at Burswood Entertainment Complex.

Some of Australia’s biggest brands were in attendance including: Bakers Delight, The Coffee Club, CHOOKS fresh & tasty and ANZ – as WA’s franchise sector toasted the success of franchisees and franchise professionals who have stood out from the crowd in 2009.

The MYOB Excellence in Franchising Awards celebrates – both regionally and nationally – the success of hard working Australian small business people.

THE WINNERS….

It was a case of two awards in two years for franchise owner Bronwyn Butcher of Frontline Recruitment who took out the WA Franchisee of the Year Award in 2008 and backed this up with the Multi-Unit Franchisee of the Year Award in 2009. Bronwyn has been a franchise owner since 2002 and operates – Frontline Retail, Hospitality, Construction, Finance and Legal. Her principles of Envision, Enable and Energise resonated throughout her submission and made Bronwyn a stand out – not only in her field – but in the WA franchise sector.

Taking out the WA Franchisee of the Year Award (2 or more staff) was husband and wife team Mick and Bronwyn Caddy of Mr Rental. Their store has been recorded as the fastest growing franchise store in the Mr Rental network to date. A unique management technique has allowed employees ownership of their part of the business – giving them responsibility and accountability – as well as training all employees in one-another’s role. This dedication to staff and business sustainability has ensured Mick and Bronwyn stay ahead of their competitors.

Other winners from the night included: Gerard & Carol Cafferkey - Bakers Delight, Geraldton (WA Franchisee Community Service Award); Susan Sanday - Frontline Health (WA Franchisee of the Year - less than 2 staff); Terri Billington – ActionCOACH (WA Franchise Woman of the Year) & Dianne Craig - CHOOKS Fresh & Tasty (WA Field Manager of the Year)

All regional winners will fight it out for the title of National winner at the Gala Awards night on 21st October – held this year for the first time in Perth - as part of the National Franchise Convention, one of the biggest events on the Australian franchising calendar.

BRIDGESTONE'S BEST RECOGNISED AT TOP AWARDS

The customer service expertise of Bridgestone’s franchise and license store network has been recognised, with five of the company’s franchisees announced as winners of Bridgestone’s 2009 Master Class Awards.

Geoff and Debbie Duggan and their team at Bridgestone Select Hobart were announced as the winners of Bridgestone’s highest accolade, fighting off tough competition from across the country to win the National Franchise / License of the Year Award.

Having been franchisees for 22 years, Geoff and Debbie have consistently featured as state finalists in the awards and they were extremely happy about going on to win the national award this year – taking home a brand new $60,000 HSV Maloo Ute for their efforts.

 

“When it was announced that we were the winners of the National Award we were really surprised – it was overwhelming,” Geoff said.

“The effort my staff have put in throughout the past 12 months has been outstanding and I really value their contribution. I have also been very well supported by my Retail Manager, Scott Turnbull, who has played an integral part in our success.”

 

The Master Class Awards, which were announced at the recent series of state retail conferences, recognise excellence in customer service under Bridgestone’s Master Class program.

Winners of the 2009 State Franchise / License of the Year Awards were Bridgestone Select Blacktown (NSW), Bridgestone Select Aberfoyle Park (SA), Bridgestone Select Esperance (WA) and Bridgestone Select Sandgate (Qld).

According to Anthony Hill, Bridgestone’s National Retail and Sales Manager, the Master Class program sets extremely high standards for customer service for all Bridgestone outlets across Australia.

“Our franchisees find that the Master Class program helps to keep them motivated and ensures that customer service is always a priority,” Mr Hill said.

“We raise the bar on the Master Class benchmarks every year. To their credit our retailers take on this challenge, and I’d like to congratulate all of the winners on their significant efforts.

 “Geoff and his team at Bridgestone Select Hobart are a huge asset to the Bridgestone retail group and are certainly proof that great customer service gets great results.”

BRUMBY'S WINS LOCAL BUSINESS AWARD

Brumby’s Upper Mt Gravatt has “risen” to the occasion, taking out the Food & Convenience Store gold medal at the 2009 Southern Star Business Achiever Awards.

The local bakery was recognised for its top quality products and exceptional customer service.

Brumby’s Upper Mt Gravatt owner Jennifer Lin said the award, now proudly displayed in store, proved the bakery was one of the best in Brisbane.

“We are very proud of the delicious, fresh products we produce,” she said.

“Our talented team of bakers work hard to make our award-winning bread.  From the early hours of the morning, we’re up baking hundreds of delicious bread rolls, pastries and scrolls for the early morning risers.”

A former project manager for a property developer, Jennifer said the bakery welcomed an array of loyal customers every day.

“Brumby’s Upper Mt Gravatt makes a range of baked goods each day, baking around 18,000 loaves of bread a year and serving over 2,300 customers each week,” she said.

MICHEL'S PATISSERIE TO STEAL A BIGGER SLICE OF LUCRATIVE COFFEE MARKET

 

 

In the competitive world of coffee Michel’s Patisserie has proved it’s a sip above the rest, launching a significant advertising and marketing campaign to promote its award-winning coffee blend and launch a new range of European-influenced coffees.

 

Michel’s Patisserie unique blend is sourced from a boutique grower in New South Wales, as well as those in Nicaragua, Brazil and Ethiopia.

 

The coffee campaign will be supported with an extensive TV campaign (PAY TV OR FTA and regional), along with direct marketing, point of sale materials and magazine advertising. The campaign was developed by advertising agency BCM, interactive marketing agency Oxygen and public relations agency BBS.

 

Michel’s Patisserie Marketing Manager Pia Harrison said as part of the company’s ongoing strategy, Michel’s would promote a new or existing coffee every month to build awareness of the patisserie’s range over the next year.

 

“Consumers often assume that Michel’s Patisserie is European. Although we are an Australian company, our internationally certified professional coffee tasters source the highest grade beans from specially selected coffee growers across the globe. This ensures Michel’s Patisserie’s coffee blend is full-bodied and rich in flavour with distinct European undertones,” she said.

 

“Michel’s Patisserie’s coffee blend is designed to stay away from the North American habit of disguising bitterness with sweet syrup flavorings, and instead to complement milk-based cappuccinos, flat whites and pastries.”

30% of new franchisees recruited online

Results from a Franchisor Expansion Study by 10 Thousand Feet into the Australian franchising industry reports the following: 

 

  • Just 10 per cent of Australian franchisors reported negative growth in 2008

  • Despite this, the $40 million plus franchisors spend on marketing each year to attract new franchisees will be significantly cut in 2009

  • Newspaper ad revenues will be one of the areas to suffer most, with just 11 per cent of new franchise leads generated through this medium in 2008 – down from 18 per cent in 2007.

In contrast, online and word of mouth recruitment strategies are set to grow with 29 per cent of new franchisees were recruited via word of mouth in 2008, and 30 per cent of new franchisees recruited

via online avenues!

South Australia Award Winners

PoolWerx West Lakes has been named South Australia’s best pool shop for the fifth year running at the South Australian Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) Awards.

Franchisees Peter and Heather Clarke, who also took out the silver medal for ‘Technician of the Year’, said the awards were their 10th and 11th respective SPASA Awards since they began operating in 1993.
