| WENDY'S CELEBRATES 30 YEAR MILESTONE |

Thirty years ago two entrepreneurs opened the doors to their first treat business in an upmarket Adelaide shopping centre.
Word soon spread about the tiny store selling delicious ice cream sundaes and treats. By lunch time on the opening day, the centre’s mains power had blown as the store’s machinery struggled to keep up with customer demand.
This extraordinary beginning was the start of a brand that has developed into one of the nation’s most recognised and well-loved franchises – Wendy’s.
Wendy’s is now celebrating 30 years in business and, with 300 stores across Australia and New Zealand, is a brand that has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1979.
“It’s very exciting to be celebrating this significant milestone in Wendy’s history,” said Wendy’s CEO Nicola Milne. “It’s a milestone that is testament to the depth and creativity of all the people who have worked with Wendy’s during the past 30 years.
“The company has grown from a single store operation to a large franchise network with an extensive range of treats and snacks and, while the Wendy’s of today is very different to that first store, the company continues to be driven by one simple philosophy – give people what they want and make it fun.
“This philosophy has played a major part in the brand’s ongoing success and will continue to do so as we look forward to another period of growth and a bright and promising future for the brand.”
A focus on innovation has always played an integral part in Wendy’s success. This focus has increased in recent years, helping to cement the brand’s position as a leader in the treats market.
Throughout its history Wendy’s has developed and introduced many new products – designed not only to deliver strong results for franchisees, but also to provide customers with increased choice, including a range of delicious healthier options.
“Wendy’s is constantly seeking out emerging trends and listening to the needs and wants of our consumers. In the last 12 months we have introduced a number of exciting new products, including our 98% fat free Frozen Yoghurt and a new and improved version of Wendy’s Chocollo® – our 99% fat free and low sugar scoop ice cream,” Ms Milne said.
“We have also made Wendy’s Rainbow Ice Cream, one of our flagship products, even better. It’s now made with natural colours and flavours, the result of extensive product development and a terrific innovation that provides a more wholesome treat with no sacrifice in taste or appearance.
“The recent launch of Wendy’s Brekky Menu has extended our trade into the morning period and a new Value Menu has incorporated some of our most popular products at affordable prices for our budget conscious customers.”
When the first Wendy’s store opened, there were just three flavours of soft serve on offer – vanilla, chocolate and yoghurt. These days the choice is significantly harder for customers with some 23 flavours of scoop ice cream and sorbets – and that’s in addition to a range of other treats including hot dogs, shakes, frozen yoghurt and smoothies.
Today, the franchise’s 300 stores generate an annual revenue exceeding $100 million and more than 350,000 customers visit Wendy’s stores across Australia and New Zealand every week.
“The current financial climate has resulted in many challenges yet the Wendy’s business has remained strong. People still enjoy their treats and we’ll certainly be looking to continue growing the franchise as customers respond with increasing loyalty to the Wendy’s brand.”

FORTY WINKS' BOARD ANNOUNCES SOME EXCITING NEWS |

At the recent Board Meeting on the 4th and 5th of August, after some healthy discussion and deliberation, it was decided by way of unanimous vote that James Hayward’s title of General Manager will be changed to Chief Executive Officer.
The board considers this to be a more fitting title in today’s business landscape and the decision was made giving full consideration to the responsibilities of James’ role.
Everyone at Forty Winks wishes James all the best as he continues to develop the National Office team and operations side of the business.
Doug McNamara, Chairman of the Forty Winks board stated:
“The board believes a more suitable title description for the role and responsibilities of James Hayward in our company would be Chief Executive Officer. It was decided that the new title better reflected his position at Forty Winks in today’s business world.”
At the same meeting, the Board also reviewed the role of their independent Director Paul Amos. After 12 successful months on board, it was unanimously decided that Paul would be invited to remain in this position for another 12 months. Forty Winks is happy that he has agreed to take on the role again.
These board decisions are very exciting and reflect that Forty Winks is constantly progressing and growing. Forty Winks is proud to make these announcements.

FRANCHISEES ACKNOWLEDGED AT NATIONAL AWARDS |
POOLWERX NATIONAL AWARDS NIGHT
Australia's leading networked pool and spa care provider PoolWerx has celebrated its national franchisee awards with a gala evening at the Hyatt Regency Coolum.
Thirteen national awards and 12 regional awards were handed out to PoolWerx Franchisees who have made outstanding contributions over the past year in the areas of entrepreneurship, courage in business and brand excellence among others
PoolWerx CEO John O’Brien said the awards were one of the most effective ways to acknowledge the continued dedication and commitment of their leading franchisees.
“We have a network of over 300 franchisees in Austraila and New Zealand and this is our opportunity to say thank you for their efforts and business success.”

The top gong of ‘Franchisee of the Year’ went to Dubbo franchisees Brett and Jenny Singleton.
O’Brien said the Dubbo franchisees were chosen out of a possible 200 candidates. The awards were based on outstanding work ethic and business results plus contributions to the PoolWerx franchise group.
The husband and wife duo, who own a PoolWerx retail hub and mobile service, said they were humbled by the award win.
“The entire PoolWerx Dubbo team has worked hard to earn the successes we have had and to be acknowledged by our franchisor nationally is a real honour,” Brett said.
The couple were also named ‘Regional Franchisees of the Year’ for the Sydney West region.

NSW/ACT MYOB FRANCHISING AWARDS
Some of Australia’s biggest franchise brands helped celebrate a “Salsa” themed MYOB NSW/ACT Excellence in Franchising Awards gala dinner at Darling Harbour, Sydney.
The guest lists was a ‘who’s who’ of Australian business success including – Bakers Delight, Wendy’s, Civic Video & Fastway Couriers.
The NSW Minister for Small Business Steve Whan was also in attendance and paid tribute to the franchisors and franchisees who are doing well in the face of very challenging economic times. “These ‘green shoots’ of recovery are signals of a growing business confidence”, the Minister said.
The MYOB Excellence in Franchising Awards celebrates – both regionally and nationally – the success of hard working Australian small business people.
THE WINNERS
Husband and wife dynamo duo Adam and Jaclyn Schoene from Bakers Delight Bondi Junction (pictured above) took out the NSW/ACT Franchisee of the Year (2 or more staff). They are driven by the task of operating a potential million dollar bakery to a five star plus standard, attributing a “Good team” as their key to success. Having successfully operated five stores across three different states, they are always looking for innovative ways to improve and grow their business. They are - possibly – the perfect prototypes for a franchisee!
Dusting other people’s houses clearly paid off for Julie Finch-Scally of The Duster Dollies, who took out the NSW/ACT Franchise Woman of the Year Award. Julie is the founder of The Duster Dollies a franchised cleaning company which she began in 1993 as a one woman operation and which has since grown to have franchise businesses across Australia. In 2005 The Duster Dollies won the Australian Achievers Award for Customer service and Julie is also an author of the book “The third oldest profession – The A-Z of house cleaning”.
Other winners from the night included: Stephen & Dearne Cameron - 'yes' Optus North Sydney (NSW/ACT Multi-Unit Franchisee of the Year); Paul Lanzon - ANZ Mobile Lending – ACT (NSW/ACT Franchisee of the Year - less than 2 staff) & Zac Pupunceski - Fastway Couriers (NSW/ACT Field Manager of the Year)
The Awards showcase has already hit VIC and travels to SA, QLD and WA over the coming weeks as we help spread the message of franchising success in Australia. A record number of Award entries this year and the high quality of submissions points directly to a sector that is driving through the economic downturn with the power of teamwork, passion and enthusiasm.

2009 AUSTRALIAN RETAIL AWARDS
Country Road, ALDI and independent retailer Allspares and Bearings and have been recognised for their outstanding achievements during tough trading conditions as national winners of the 2009 ARA Australian Retail Awards.
After being voted the clothing and footwear category winner by retailers across Australia, Country Road took out the retail industry's top honour as 2009 Australian Retailer of the Year despite stiff competition from ALDI (Food, drink and grocery 2009 Australian Retailer of the Year), L'Occitane (Speciality retailing 2009 Australian Retailer of the Year) and Subway (Restaurants, cafés and takeaway 2009 Australian Retailer of the Year).
ARA Executive Director Russell Zimmerman said over the past five years Country Road has successfully repositioned itself as a fashionable and accessible brand for the younger consumer.
"Despite tough global economic conditions, Country Road has recorded strong sales results for the past two years underpinned by their commitment to rewarding customers and the relaunch of their two-tiered loyalty program," Zimmerman said.
ALDI didn't leave empty handed - taking out the 2009 Australian Retail Innovation of the Year for their leadership and innovation in unit and national pricing, store design, product packaging and maternity leave policy.
"ALDI is consistently the first Australian grocery retailer to adopt unique strategies that benefit the community including consumers and their own staff. We're delighted to recognise their outstanding leadership and innovation," Zimmerman said.
ARA Australian Retail Awards also recognised the outstanding achievements and business nous of 2009 Australian Independent Retailer of the Year Allspares and Bearings.
Since it opened in 2001, Allspares and Bearings (Yarrawonga in country Victoria) has grown from a single person operation to a retailer of over 5000 different product lines for industrial spare parts and accessories. Owner Shane Cummins has recently developed a new product - Aussie Scales - after consultation with local grain growers who were looking for an alternative to inaccurate paddock weighing systems to allow farmers to get as close to the legal limit as possible without overloading trucks.
The ARA Australian Retail Awards program is designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations in the growth and development of their businesses and their contributions towards retailing in Australia. Award categories in 2009 include Independent Retailer, Retail Innovation, ARA Young Retailer and Retailer of the Year.
