ARA TO PROTECT RETAILERS AND PROJECT JOBS

ARA calls on AIRC to follow Fair Pay Commission lead

Peak retail industry body the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has presented at the Australian Industrial Relations Commissions (AIRC) hearings for award modernisation transitional issues.

ARA Executive Director Russell Zimmerman said as the only retail body representing retailers at the AIRC hearings, the ARA called for the full five year transitional period to be utilised when introducing the new retail award.

"Right now, increased wage bills will simply be unsustainable for smaller retailers who have said they will shed staff to cope with the new laws. They need the full transitional period to stagger the impact of increased wage bills over five years," Zimmerman said.

"Earlier this month, the Australian Fair Pay Commission (AFPC) made a landmark decision to maintain minimum wages at current levels to protect jobs and support stronger economic recovery. The same rationale must be applied to any increase in wage bills as a result of the modern retail award.

"The AFPC recognised increased labour costs wouldn't be absorbed by retail employers who are only just beginning to recover after over 12 months of reduced consumer demand. The AIRC must follow this lead when considering the five year phase-in of the average 14 percent wage bill increase small retailers will face when the modern award is introduced*.

"If the full transition period isn't utilised, retailers will be faced with three options: further casualisation of the retail workforce; shedding staff and reducing weekend trading. The culmination of these alternatives will result in increased job insecurity and a failure to meet consumer demand," Zimmerman said.

The ARA is particularly concerned about sharp increases to labour costs in the following areas:
. Casual loadings;
. Changes to retail employment classifications;
. Clothing and laundry allowances; and
. Penalties for ordinary time worked on Sundays.

For over 105 years, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has been the peak industry body in Australia's $292 billion retail sector which employs over 1.5 million people. As an incorporated employer body under the Workplace Relations Act and with a range of member services including business consulting, policy development, advocacy and education, the ARA promotes and protects over 5000 independent and national retailers throughout Australia. BRUMBY'S BAKES 'TRES BON' INTERNATIONAL BREADS

Brumby's Bakery Logo

Adding a touch of international cuisine to Australian dinner tables, Brumby’s has ventured across the globe to develop a range of international breads for household chefs.

Launched in time to celebrate France’s Bastille Day on 14 July, the promotion of the worldly range of artisan breads includes French Provencale or Champagne Loaf from France, Ciabatta and Pane de Casa from Italy and Sour Dough from San Francisco.

Brumby’s Bakery Marketing Manager Michelle McBride said Brumby’s new international bread range was baked fresh in store every day.

“In the current economic climate, we’ve found our customers want delicious fresh bread with an affordable price tag, but they are also after a little luxury,” she said.

“Offering warm, fresh and crusty breads inspired by European and American tastebuds is certainly a way to satisfy the hunger for those little luxuries when times get a bit tougher.

“Apart from gourmet breads from France, Italy and San Francisco, many of our bakeries will also make Turkish bread, Bavarian Rye and Kythera.”

From 13 July to 2 August, every time a customer purchases bread from Brumby’s international bread range, they will receive a free French Bread Stick.

Brumby’s operates more than 300 stores across Australia, employing over 3,300 staff and serving more than 700,000 Australians a week.

Mortgage Choice improvements flowing in thick and fast

Three announcements Mortgage Choice has made over recent weeks demonstrate the nationwide franchisor’s determination in marking its territory as Australia’s leading mortgage broker and a company that is building strong value for all key stakeholders, especially its franchisees:

  • A refreshed look and feel for the 16+ year old brand, based on extensive consumer research and staff workshops, which is designed to reflect the company’s brand essence – the key values of empowering borrower decision and providing credible guidance. A marketing campaign kicks off over July and August, and features the company’s new tagline ‘Let’s make the right move’.
  • The addition of a new lender to its panel: Homeloans Ltd, a respected mortgage provider that began operating in 1985. This brings the panel membership to 23.
  • The addition to the Mortgage Choice service offering of Lifebroker, Australia’s largest life insurance broker. It presents Australians with a simple, online-based, no-obligation comparison of hundreds of life, TPD, trauma and income protection insurance policies available from 13 of Australia’s major life insurance companies.

As Mortgage Choice CEO Michael Russell says, “Every time we broaden our service offering, we empower our franchisees. Mortgage Choice remains a mortgage broker at its core but additional products and services obviously deliver additional income to our franchisees and the company as a whole. We are working hard to identify opportunities that add value and help us improve upon the superior service we provide Australians.”

Advertising Opportunities

30% of new franchisees recruited online

Results from a Franchisor Expansion Study by 10 Thousand Feet into the Australian franchising industry reports the following:

  • Just 10 per cent of Australian franchisors reported negative growth in 2008

  • Despite this, the $40 million plus franchisors spend on marketing each year to attract new franchisees will be significantly cut in 2009

  • Newspaper ad revenues will be one of the areas to suffer most, with just 11 per cent of new franchise leads generated through this medium in 2008 – down from 18 per cent in 2007.

In contrast, online and word of mouth recruitment strategies are set to grow with 29 per cent of new franchisees were recruited via word of mouth in 2008, and 30 per cent of new franchisees recruited

via online avenues!

Legislation to effect small business

The initial phase of the Rudd Government's Fair Work Act 2009 came into effect on July 1, replacing the former WorkChoice legislation and experts are warning that many businesses may face an increase in costs with the rollout.

Major changes include holidays, redundancy and working hours.  The cost of paying staff on weekends and public holidays means that small businesses may feel the pinch.

There are fact sheets available from the Fair Work Australia office which outline the changes.

Odd Spot News

India: Burger King has once again found itself on the receiving end of protests regarding its advertising.

In the latest advertising misfire, the Texican Whopper was promoted using the image of Lakshmi, the revered Indian goddess with a 'forbidden' Whopper burger.

Earlier this year, Burger King offended Mexican officials with another advertisement for the Whopper which depicted a dwarf dressed as a wrestler draped in the Mexican flag. (Yes, really!)
