FCA CALLS ON BANKS TO PASS ON INTEREST RATE REDUCTIONS TO SMALL BUSINES

Responding to yesterday's 25 basis point interest rate reduction by the RBA, Franchise Council of Australia Executive Director Steve Wright said “banks had made a pledge at a recent meeting with small business representatives and the Minister for Small Business Dr Craig Emerson, to pass on interest rate reductions to small business borrowers”.

“Mortgage rates for consumers have dropped much more rapidly than loans to small businesses.  It is time the banks stepped up to pass on the benefit of the cuts to the official interest rates, especially given that many small business borrowers are securing their loans against their homes.”

“Small businesses – especially franchising – will be drivers of a return to economic growth and it is imperative for the national economy that banks facilitate this by continuing to lend to small business - and doing so at a fair rate.”

The Franchise Council of Australia Limited (FCA) is the peak body for the $130 billion franchise

sector in Australia, representing franchisors, franchisees and service providers to the sector.

New Donut King takes flight at Brisbane International Airport

Australia’s biggest donut maker Donut King has opened its first airport store this week, rolling out fresh donuts and treats at the Brisbane International Airport.

Donut King is operating at departures on Level 4 of the International Terminal, joining the newly-renovated food court.

Store owner Greg Holmes said the store was a step in a new direction for Donut King, catering to travellers and airport visitors looking for a tasty treat.

“Traditionally Donut King stores have only been located in shopping centres, but we felt there was a real demand at the airport.”

Brumby’s warns consumers of preservative-charged hot cross buns

Australians are being warned that not all hot cross buns will be created equal this Easter, with some pre-packaged varieties using preservatives and additives to substitute freshness.

Research by Brumby’s Bakeries has found that some pre-packaged hot cross buns contain a range of preservatives to extend the product’s shelf life

Brumby’s Marketing Manager Michelle McBride said consumers should be wary of these “dead” hot cross buns.

She said hot cross bun lovers should check the product’s ingredient list to ensure they were getting the freshest and best-quality buns available.

“Some bakers try to mimic bakery freshness by using preservatives such as Calcium propionate (282) to prolong the life of the product,” she said.

“A good rule of thumb for consumers is that if they aren’t buying their hot cross buns directly from the baker, then they may be some of the pre-packaged variety which contain preservatives to keep them ‘alive’.

“Our preservative-free hot cross buns are made with high quality ingredients, including Australian flour.”

Originally eaten on Good Friday, the popularity of hot cross buns has prompted many bakeries to sell them in the lead up to the Easter period.

Brumby’s stores across Australia expect to sell more than 2.5 million hot cross buns in the six weeks until Easter.  It has three varieties of hot cross buns, Traditional, Chocolate and Fruitless.

Brumby’s operates more than 300 stores across Australia, employing over 3,300 staff and serving more than 700,000 Australians a week.    Brumby’s is owned and managed by ASX listed Retail Food Group Limited (RFG), a leading Australian retail food brand manager and franchisor.

Howards Storage World continues international expansion

80 stores planned for Europe’s Benelux region

Australian organisational expert, Howards Storage World is defying the global downward trend with news it will further expand internationally. A Master Franchisee for the Benelux region of Europe, which encompasses Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg has commenced the signing process.

The first Howards Storage World Benelux store will open in October 2009 in Waterloo, Belgium. There are plans to open 30 stores in Belgium and 50 in The Netherlands over the next 10 years.

Managing Director of the Benelux Master Franchise, Michel Dusausoy – who has recently completed the first stage of training at Howards Storage World’s International Office in Sydney - says the Benelux Group Directors are very optimistic about the brand’s prospects in Western Europe.

“I first discovered Howards Storage World at the Belgium franchising fair in April 2008. I was excited by this unique Australian concept and realised there was space in the Benelux market for a brand that specialised in home storage solutions.

“We have conducted extensive market research since April 2008 with our findings highlighting the attractiveness of this brand to consumers.  We aim to rapidly expand the franchise over the next 10 years to include 80 stores throughout the region,” says Michel Dusausoy.

The Howards Storage World franchise began in 1997 with the first store in Northbridge, Sydney, owned by Les and Edda Howard.  Today the business has grown to 63 stores throughout Australia and 80 stores internationally.

Howards Storage World franchises currently operate in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Singapore, Ireland and the GCC Territories in the Middle East (including Dubai and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). Stores are soon to open in the Philippines with a site now under review.  A Memorandum of Understanding has also been signed and deposit paid for Scandinavia which encompasses Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Co-founder and joint CEO, Dirk Spence says the organisation’s worldwide expansion signals the brand’s international market relevance and commercial viability.

“The introduction of the Howards Storage World brand into the Benelux region is an exciting addition to our international portfolio and we’re very impressed by the professionalism of our new Benelux partners. Their detailed business plan suggests a carefully thought through strategy for success. We look forward to seeing this great Australian concept reach its full potential in Benelux,” says Dirk Spence.
