WENDY'S YOUTH SUPPORT HELPS LOCAL STUDENTS HIT THE TRACK

Around 100 South Australian students with integration difficulties got the chance to try out a range of sports on Thursday, March 26 in the lead up to National Youth Week.

Students from Salisbury High, Golden Grove High School and Thomas More College attended an annual sports carnival hosted by SASRAPID – the South Australian Sport and Recreation Association for People with Integration Difficulties – with assistance from Wendy’s Youth Support* grant.

“The sports carnival is held annually and provides the opportunity for young people who have an integration difficulty (intellectual and other disabilities which may affect the integration of a person into regular community activities) to try their skills at a range of sport, recreation and leisure activities,” said TRAC Project Officer Mike Fidge.

“We rely on funding to ensure we can continue to offer our services so we were really pleased to receive a $1,000 grant from Wendy’s Youth Support – a national fundraising program which was set up to support Australia’s disadvantaged children and youth.”

TRAC Project Manager, Mark Fidge with Wendy's Samantha Sturm

Wendy’s Youth Support was launched to help provide a brighter future for some of Australia’s less fortunate youth. The program offers grants from $500 up to $3,000 to local charities that support young people.

“The grant enabled us to purchase new sporting equipment which means it will benefit this year’s participants as well as students who take part in the program for years to come,” Mike said.

As part of the sports carnival, students will be placed in teams to try a number of sports including volleyball, football, netball and cricket thanks to the assistance of state sporting organisations.

“The feedback we get from students about this initiative is really positive – anyone who has played a team sport will know the value of learning how to work with a team and feeling like you’re a part of that team,” Mike said.

For Peter Lokan, Wendy’s General Manager Marketing, supporting Australia’s young people was an obvious choice for Wendy’s.

“A large number of our staff and customers are children or teenagers, which is one of the reasons we believe this program is so important. It’s a meaningful way for Wendy’s to make a contribution to local communities across the country,” Mr Lokan said.

CONTOURS APPOINTS NEW CEO

Contours Women’s Fitness Franchise, one of Australia’s fastest growing franchises, has appointed a new CEO, Justin Wilshaw.  Mr. Wilshaw joined Contours in January 2009 and has extensive experience operating as a franchisee and franchisor of major franchise brands.

Mr. Wilshaw’s vision for Contours over the next 12 months is to continue to expand operations in Australia, with specific focus on Queensland and South Australia.  As a first priority, he is currently in the process of developing and implementing a five year strategic plan for the business which will direct growth of the company moving forward. Through this, he aims to deliver improved benefits to members and provide greater return on investment for franchisees.

“I really believe in the franchise model and have seen how the entrepreneurial sprit can drive both individual and corporate success,” said Mr. Wilshaw.  He continued, “Developing this young brand further is a motivating challenge, especially since it is already winning awards for its remarkable expansion.”

Prior to this role, he was a General Manager at Delaware North Companies Australia which focussed on travel, entertainment and accommodation.  In addition to his current role at Contours, Justin’s franchise experience is vast.  Before his position at Delaware North Companies, he held positions at Boost Juice and at the Burger King Corporation.

Preceding Mr. Wilshaw, Dave Hundt served as Contours CEO from the brand’s inception in 2005.  During this time, Mr. Hundt saw an opportunity to establish the Contours strong product and business model in a quickly developing market segment (express fitness), growing the brand to over 200 studios with more than 50,000 members. He still sits as a member of the Board of Directors.

As one of the first express fitness product to specifically target women between the ages of 35 & 75, Contours has become one of Australia’s fastest growing franchises with an average of two Contours studios opening every week. In a clear sign of the success that Contours offers its franchisees, over 40% of franchisees now operate multiple units.

Contours  is a unique fitness concept for women on the go, based on an innovative 29 minute workout program that combines the latest weight-bearing equipment specifically designed for women with an intensive cardio workout in a small studio environment.

Before you sign anything, be sure to undertake due diligence, ask advice from experts.

Franchise Advisory Council's Jason Gerhke, joined us recently with his advice when looking at franchising:

"For a $100,000 business, that’s 100 hours of research, or about two and half weeks full-time work. That might sound like a lot of research, but a bit of time invested up front can save a franchisee from the devastating consequences of hasty and ill-considered investment decision." Jason says.
