FORTY WINKS SHOWS THAT CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY DOESN'T END WHEN UNCERTAINTY BEGINS

Forty Winks is proud to announce a brand new partnership with the Starlight Children’s Foundation of Australia. For the first time in Forty Winks’ 25 year history, the company has donated $100,000.00 to Starlight, signaling the true core values of the Forty Winks brand and their desire to make a contribution to broader society on a philanthropic level.

Starlight is an organisation whose mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia. The substantial contribution by Forty Winks will translate into 20 “dreams coming true” for children across Australia though Starlight’s Wish Granting Program. These wishes will be granted to seriously ill children ranging from 4-21 years of age throughout 2009.

As Australia’s largest bedding specialist retailer, Forty Winks is committed to making a difference within the community, so not only does this contribution come directly from all 90 of the Forty Winks stores nationwide, but each Forty Winks store will be involved in future events and fundraisers over and above this amount.

Therefore, while this initiative has been implemented at a corporate level, it will filter down through each and every franchisee and their respective staff to ensure metro and regional involvement is maximised.

Corporate social responsibility is clearly not just about giving away money, but about identifying appropriate associations between brands that offer a natural alignment, such as Starlight and Forty Winks. It’s a synergy that once in place, feels like it’s always been that way, and in turn builds brand value, improves employee moral and fosters customer loyalty.

“I believe that corporate social responsibility is consistent with good business ethics and is a fundamental platform for the company and community moving forward,” says James Hayward, General Manager of Forty Winks. “We are thrilled to be announcing this partnership.”

Doug McNamara, Chairman of the Forty Winks board says: “The board recognized it was time to harness the fund raising efforts of our 90 plus stores across Australia, to become far more effective and meaningful to the general community. I’m really pleased at the way our stores have embraced and supported our corporate social responsibilities.”

DOUGH NEEDED TO HELP SICK KIDS ACROSS AUSTRALIA

Help Bakers Delight raise money for sick children on Saturday 28 March!

Easter shopping list...

  • 26 tonnes of flour
  • 22 tonnes of sultanas
  • 16 tonnes of currants
  • 2.5 tonnes of spices

What can you make with all these ingredients?

About 783,000 Hot Cross Buns, which will buy essential equipment for children’s hospitals across Australia!

Bakers across Australia are calling for customers to make their Hot Cross Bun purchase really count this Easter by raising valuable dough for children’s hospitals across the country this Saturday 28 March.

On ‘Bundraiser’Day, more than 630 Bakers Delight bakeries Across Australia will be donating $1 from every six-pack of Hot Cross Buns sold to their local children’s hospital, helping make a difference for sick children, such as 8-year-old Nikki Constantinou this Easter.

Funds raised from Hot Cross Buns sold in New South Wales will go towards purchasing a Nitric Oxide Machine for the Sydney Children’s Hospital – equipment which will help kids like Nikki who suffer from acute asthma breathe easier.

Associate Professor Adam Jaffe, Head of the Respiratory Department at Sydney Children’s Hospital, said: “Asthma in kids is a major problem in Australia. In most cases children are well controlled on asthma medication, but there are some, such as Nikki, who often suffer from repeat asthma attacks.

“Asthma is a symptom that can sometimes mimic other conditions the Nitric Oxide Machine will allow doctors to pinpoint the issue and guide treatment. There are only a handful of places in Australia that have this capability and we are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Bakers Delight.”

Nationally, hospitals set to benefit from Bakers Delight’s fundraising efforts include:

Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation (NSW)

Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal (VIC)

Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation (QLD)

Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation (WA)

Women and Children’s Hospital Foundation (SA)

Royal Hobart Hospital (TAS)

Royal Darwin Hospital (NT)

Chris Caldwell, General Manager at Bakers Delight said: “We’ve been baking our Hot Cross Buns for over 29 years and they are one of our biggest sellers. For 10 years we’ve been raising money for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation in Western Australia, and due to its success we wanted to extend this initiative across our network and give something back to communities across Australia.

“We encourage all our customers to make their Hot Cross Bun purchase count this year, by purchasing a six-pack on Saturday 28 March so we can reach our target and help children like Nikki,” added Chris.

Bucking Bull Opens 27th Store!

Welcome Bucking Bull – Grand Central Toowoomba, QLD

The 27th Bucking Bull store opened its doors to hungry food court patrons last week in Toowoomba’s Grand Central Shopping Centre.

Grand Central Shopping Centre is the premier shopping centre within Queensland’s Darling Downs region, located approximately 130km west of Brisbane.

Bucking Bull’s traditional offer of delicious roast meals, fresh from the grill burgers, subs, sandwiches, spuds, snacks and myriad of home-style meals, is already proving to be a huge success in Toowoomba and has been well received by the locals – almost too well, “we kept running out of stock and topped national sales for the first three days. Toowoomba seems to be a meat and three veg kinda town and if these first four days are any indication we should be in for a busy time come winter”, says franchisee Elizabeth Gillam.

Burgers have been a massive hit with customers, with 12 dozen bread rolls flying out the door last Thursday. Spuds are also proving their popularity, even with 2 other spud outlets within the food court. “I guess it proves if we do it well, the customers will buy it” says Franchise Operations Manager, Renee Johnston.

Within the first 4 days of trade, an unreal sales result of $19,000 was achieved which is testament to the outstandingly positive reaction by customers so far.

Franchisees, Arthur and Elizabeth Gillam (pictured) are a very welcome addition to the Bucking Bull family. The Gillams also own another 2 franchised stores – Healthy Habits and Boost Juice – both located in Grand Central Shopping Centre.

Both Renee and Franchise Support & Training Manager, Rebecca Swain have been heavily involved with the set up and initial running of the new Toowoomba store. This hands on approach along with the dedication, experience and enthusiasm of Elizabeth and Arthur, has ensured a smooth opening and will ensure the continued success of the store.

The new Bucking Bull store is the result of a rebrand of the original Grand Central carvery, ‘Rojos’. On rebranding to Bucking Bull, Elizabeth says “Once we started the research on the Bucking Bull franchise we found that a lot of work had been done to roll the franchise out to a lot more centres and their forward planning seemed exceptional”.

“Since we had been operating a carvery we found that the time saving methods used by Bucking Bull enabled us to run a better labour percentage. We thought we had secured exceptional prices from our suppliers – we had – but Bucking Bull had secured even better buying”.

Much of the original Rojos staff are still on board, with the addition of some new team members too. Based on the massive sales increases the store has been experiencing, they have quickly found the need for more staff and are bringing new people on board each day.

Elizabeth and Arthur are now on a mission to ensure the systems and practises used in their store are smooth and that staff are fully trained to put them on track to achieving the “top sales per trading hour in the system”, says Elizabeth.

ANZAC Day - Public Holiday - Yes or No ?

As we mentioned in an earlier edition of The Insider, there is some confusion about whether there is a public holiday for ANZAC day.

The answer, it seems, all depends upon where you live:

Western Australia - public holiday Monday 27 April

ACT - public holiday Monday 27 April

However, if you live anywhere else in the country, ANZAC day will be held on Saturday 25 April - with no public holiday.
