Mortgage Choice wins coveted Industry Awards

Australia’s leading mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice is proud to have claimed two esteemed industry accolades at the 2009 Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia Awards.

For the fourth time in five years, the nationwide franchisor won the Retail Aggregator / Originator of the Year award, which is open to originator groups where all members trade under the same brand. Mortgage Choice’s previous wins occurred in 2008, 2006 and 2005.

In addition to the company accolade, long-time franchise partners Mark Boulton and Anthony Smith won Mortgage Broking Business of the Year (6+ Loan Writers). It is the business duo’s second award for the year, having won 2008 Mortgage Choice Victoria/Tasmania Multi Franchise Operator of the Year at the company’s national conference in January.

Mortgage Choice Managing Director, Paul Lahiff said the company and its network is overjoyed with being bestowed both honours at the MFAA Awards ceremony.

“Winning Retail Aggregator / Originator of the Year is a compliment to the entire Mortgage Choice family, from our franchise network to our staff, lender partners and suppliers,” he said.

“We are proud to have been recognised in this category a number of times. It indicates how hard we work together to uphold the company’s core values regardless of any challenges. Building Mortgage Choice to greater heights has always been a group effort so a big thank you must go out to everyone, with a special thanks to our franchisees and their staff, who impress me every day with their determination and dedication”.

Nominated Mortgage Choice finalists included: Colin Fairchild, Mortgage Choice in Clayfield (Achievement Award); Brad Anderson, Mortgage Choice in Dee Why, (Mortgage Broker of the Year); and Graham Bowling, Mortgage Choice in Mackay, (Mortgage Broking Business (2-5 Loan Writers)).

RETAILERS CALL FOR EXTENSION ON SMALL BUSINESS TAX BREAK

60% of SME retailers to miss out on depreciating assets additional tax break

Peak industry body the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) is calling for the Federal Government's additional 30 percent tax break for small business to be extended to eligible assets purchased before July 2010, *after almost 60 percent of SME retailers said they won't be taking advantage of the incentive by the 30 June 2009 deadline.

ARA Executive Director Richard Evans said extending the deadline on the small business tax breaks offered as part of the Federal Government's Nation Building and Jobs Plan would allow SME retailers, who are still suffering after months of stagnant and declining growth last year, to responsibly invest back into their business.

"The Federal Government's small business tax break of an additional 30 percent deduction for eligible depreciating assets costing $1,000 or more, could help the 80 percent of independent retailers who turn over less than $2 million per year. But the majority of them can't afford the initial outlay of investment during the first half of this year," Evans said.

"Our forecast modelling suggests SME retailers will be in a better position to invest in depreciating assets by the end of the 2010 financial year.

"The March quarter is always the toughest for retailer cash flow as credit card bills from Christmas roll in and back to school costs rein in consumer discretionary spend.

"But retailers are hopeful improved growth will return to the sector by the September quarter when SME retailers will be better placed to invest in assets eligible for the additional 30 percent tax break.

"SME retailers are still waiting for last year's interest rate cuts - which usually take six months to flow through to the retail sector - to have an affect on consumer spend. And retailers aren't expecting to see any impact of the Household Stimulus Package until the September quarter.

"Let's allow these positive economic influences to impact the market and give SME retailers - who have been suffering for months - a chance to take advantage of the Federal Government's small business tax breaks and put a much needed boost of investment back into their businesses," Evans said.

For over 104 years, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has been the peak industry body in Australia's $292 billion retail sector which employs over 1.2 million people. As an incorporated employer body under the Workplace Relations Act and with a range of member services including business consulting, policy development, advocacy and education, the ARA supports and represents over 5000 members throughout Australia.
