Today we ask an expert:

Can franchising surge in an economic downturn?

We welcome Jason Gehrke to share his view on this topic.

Established franchise systems with a critical mass of profitable, satisfied franchisees will not only weather the current economic storm, but will come out the other side in better shape. Indeed some may even buy out a competitor or two along the way.

Their growth will often be at the expense of independent small businesses that don’t have the marketing clout, supply chain dynamics and support of a franchise network.

In particular, franchises that are cash businesses (or those with incredibly tight credit controls) that also have clever marketing and exceptional levels of customer service will perform strongly in any economic climate.

There is opportunity in adversity for any entrepreneur. New franchise concepts emerge in Australia at the rate of about 100 per year. While not all of these will be viable in the long term, concepts that help maintain the functionality and extend the life cycle of assets such as cars and houses can do well at times when people can’t or won’t upgrade.

(eg. Home maintenance and renovation, vehicle rejuvenation and accessorisation, etc, fall into this category, as owners may no longer be able or willing to replace such items with new assets and need to make do with what they already have).

Concepts that trade time for money by providing services will still experience strong demand as their customers are likely to be working longer hours in jobs where they themselves will be expected to achieve more with less.

Rising unemployment as organisations downsize and outsource will increase the number of potential franchisees available to start their own businesses. For many, franchising will be their preferred way of staying in the workforce.

However, any potential franchisee must be prepared to undertake extensive due diligence before buying any franchise, according to the following rule:

Spend at least one hour of research

for each thousand dollars a franchise will cost.

For a $100,000 business, that’s 100 hours of research, or about two and half weeks full-time work. That might sound like a lot of research, but a bit of time invested up front can save a franchisee from the devastating consequences of hasty and ill-considered investment decision.

An open letter from Lifetime Distributors

During November of 2007, Lifetime Distributors NSW announced that our new nominated charity would be Make-A-Wish Australia. I also reconfirmed that 5 cents from every product purchased by our customers would be donated to Make-A-Wish® Australia and that it would be our objective to raise $50,000 per year.

At the conclusion of our 1st year’s support of Make-A-Wish® Australia, it is with great pleasure that I am able to announce that Lifetime Distributors NSW did achieve our objective of raising $50,000. This donation was presented to Helen Bird – General Manager Fundraising and Development by Steve Binnie, NSW Franchisee of the year at our Christmas Party.

There can be no doubt that this achievement would not have been possible without the continued support of you, our valued customers during 2008 and all of the Lifetime Distributors NSW team thank you for this.

It will be our objective to continue to provide to you great quality products at up to 60% off the recommended retail pricing backed by exceptional levels of service from our dedicated Franchisees and Distributors.

I am therefore extremely positive that Lifetime Distributors NSW will be able to increase our donation for 2009.

Best Regards,

John Date

NSW Master Franchisee

Lifetime Distributors was founded in 1990 and is the largest display marketing book company in Australasia selling over more than 4 million products per year.

NEW MANAGEMENT WELCOMED TO AUTOARN KAWANA WATERS IN STYLE

A big two-day event to celebrate new management taking over the Autobarn store in Kawana Waters, Queensland, has proven to be a raging success.

Despite threatening rain over the two day event on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of February, sunny skies greeted shoppers on day one and the car park was instantly packed with locals keen to pick up a bargain and check out the range of displays on hand.

Australian drag racing legend Victor Bray and his equally-speedy son Ben were on hand on the Saturday with their Castrol EDGE drag car to meet customers and gave them more than they expected when Ben started up the roaring drag machine’s engine for all to hear.

Fat Pizza and Swing & Shift SBS TV stars Pauly and Kev The Kiwi also added great humour to the day, which also featured the SEAFM Cruisers and BBQ and face painting for the kids.

The TV comedians – and regulars in Autobarn advertisements on television around the country – proved to be a hit, although they did receive a visit from the local police to keep them in order!

Pauly even went as far as to make a bus load of Brisbane-bound people pull over and talk to him, helping to ensure the Kawana Waters event was something very different from the normal!
