Ignorance is no excuse
A Melbourne video outlet which paid student workers with free rental videos and DVDs has back-paid the six employees a total of almost $500 after an investigation by the Workplace Ombudsman. “The employer has been put on notice – step out of line again and litigation is very much on the table,” he said. “Ignorance will not be an acceptable excuse second time around.”

Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd announced its annual profit and it's up by 29.6 per cent after strong sales growth across the group, particularly in Europe. Australia's only publicly-listed pizza company made a net profit for the year ended June 29 of $11.83 million, up from $9.13 million in the previous year.

Australia's third biggest pizza chain, Eagle Boys Pizza, announced an increase of full year sales by almost 22 per cent. Eagle Boys increased its number of stores with 51 new stores opening and more to follow.
Revenue for the 12 months to 30 June grew to $125 million.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today issued its final decision to grant authorisation* to the Australian National Retailers Association to conduct a four-week trial of a ten cent charge for lightweight plastic shopping bags. The trial will be held in select Victorian stores.

A recent report indicates that the Do Not Call Register may be extended to include all business numbers and fax numbers, which will create extra compliance, red tape and costs for business.
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, has invited submissions into an inquiry to expand the Do Not Call Register.
"The Do Not Call Register has proved extremely popular. However, the Government is aware that there is some community demand to allow the registration of fax numbers and the telephone numbers used by organisations, such as small businesses," Conroy says.
At present telephone numbers used primarily for business use, emergency service numbers and fax numbers cannot be listed on the Do Not Call Register.

A Melbourne sports ground is being renamed in memory of Crazy John's mobile phone entrepreneur John Ilhan. The Broadmeadows Reserve will undergo a $500,000 redevelopment and be renamed the John Ilhan Memorial Reserve, Victorian Premier John Brumby announced yesterday. The Victorian Government and the Hume City Council will each contribute $250,000 towards building a synthetic soccer pitch at the reserve in tribute to Ilhan, who died of a heart attack last year.
