Grassroots sporting clubs better be quick off the blocks as nominations for local sporting clubs to win a Bakers Delight Top Sports Club Grant have kicked off!
Championed by Australian sporting legend, Andrew Gaze, Bakers Delight’s Top Sports Club Grants program offers clubs around Australia the opportunity to win one of 60 cash grants worth $2,500 each. The program is part of a broader initiative which will see Bakers Delight invest $250,000 in grassroots sports by the end of the year.
As families begin to feel the pressure of increasing financial strains, Chris Caldwell, General Manager of Marketing for Bakers Delight said the bakery franchise is keen to lend a helping hand when it comes to sports. “It’s clear that local sporting clubs need some assistance, and we are keen to make a difference in the local communities our bakeries serve. Bakers Delight has a strong focus on health, so supporting local sporting clubs with Top Sports Grants is a great fit,” said Chris. |
Nominating:
Placing a nomination for a sporting club is simple. By purchasing a Savoury Scroll from any of the 640 Bakers Delight bakeries across Australia, customers earn the right to nominate a sporting club to receive a $2,500 cash grant. The more nominations a club receives, the greater the chance of winning as the 60 winning clubs will be drawn at random from a national pool of nominations.
Andrew Gaze has thrown his support behind Top Sports, adding: “Playing sport is not always about achieving the highest level, but just getting out there and being active. Too often community sports suffer from a lack of financial assistance so it’s wonderful Bakers Delight is providing much-needed financial support and fostering our next generation of sporting greats.”
Nominations can be made at Bakers Delight bakeries until 20th August 2008. Winners will be drawn on 8th September 2008.

| Females choose flexibility and stimulation over $$ |

Mortgage Choice discovered female potential franchisees see the ability to control their time and movements as the most important aspect of running their own business. Stimulation, challenge and personal achievement are almost as important.
The nation’s leading publicly listed franchisor commissioned its second annual Potential Franchisee Survey to uncover behaviour drivers for Australians looking to purchase a franchise in the next three years. 45% were female respondents.
The top reasons they gave for wanting to run their own business were:
- 55% - Flexibility i.e. ability to control own time/movements/etc
- 53% - Looking for stimulation, challenge and personal achievement
Females were less likely to say ‘break away from the corporate bureacracy’, at 16% compared to males’ 24%. |
|
The biggest appeal of being part of a franchise system was:
- Established franchisor brand recognition
- Established business model to follow
Retail – food, restaurants and cafés (48%) remained the most popular industry then business and professional services (27%), followed by domestic services (23%), health, beauty and personal services (22%), tourism, leisure and accommodation (20.1%), education and training services (19%) and retail – other (19%).
A brave 22% of females are going it alone with their franchise purchase while 53% of females will enter into it with their partner/spouse (compared to a significantly higher 61% of males).

| Alvin and the Chipmunks gatecrash Brisbane's Royal Children's Hospital |
Alvin and the Chipmunks have gatecrashed the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, with Brumby’s Bakery donating 100 of the chipmunk plush toys to the hospital to celebrate the launch of the new movie on DVD.
Sick children and their siblings at the hospital all received the adorable chipmunks sporting brightly coloured hoodies and cheeky smiles.
 |
Brumby’s Marketing Manager Michelle McBride said Brumby’s was thrilled to be able to donate the loveable little chipmunks to such a good cause.
“It’s great to know that we can help put a smile on the face of these beautiful kids,” she said.
“Today’s kids will know the recent movie, while their parents will remember the 1980s TV series. Across the decades, the singing brothers Alvin, Simon and Theodore have collected countless fans and Brumby’s is excited to join in the fun.”
Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO Karenlee Spillane said it was this sort of community generosity that really lifted the spirits of sick kids.

Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO Karenlee Spillane said it was this sort of community generosity that really lifted the spirits of sick kids.
“We are thrilled that Brumby’s has come up with this initiative. As well as enjoying the wonderful entertainment facilities already at the hospital, our kids now have their new chipmunk plush toys to keep them company – they will feel they have a friend joining them on their journey. It really helps,” she said.
Ms McBride said Brumby’s Bakeries across Australian had been keen benefactors of their local communities for years.
“Each year, Brumby's stores across Australia collectively donate over $25 million worth of its quality products to charities, community groups and the less fortunate,” she said.
Brumby’s is offering an Alvin and the Chipmunks Snak Pak for $4.95, featuring a children’s drink, Alvin cup cake and a free plush toy of either Alvin, Simon or Theodore. Customers who spend more than $8 on breads and baked products in one transaction at Brumby’s will also receive a free Alvin and the Chipmunks plush toy.
Brumby’s operates more than 300 stores across Australia, employing over 3,300 staff to more than 700,000 Australians a week. Brumby’s is owned and managed by Retail Food Group (RFG), a leading Australian retail food brand manager and franchisor.

| Just Cuts Franchise of the Year |
|
The Southern Hemisphere’s largest hairdressing network, Just Cuts, has just announced their 2008 Franchise of the Year – Just Cuts Woden. Franchise owners, John and Monica Longmire are thrilled to have won the award which has been running for two years.
The award is based on salon productivity, mystery shopper results and the fulfilment of reports to head office. The franchise owner must have been in the Just Cuts system for a minimum of 12 months.
“This award recognises our Woden salon to be the best Just Cuts franchise in all of Australia. It’s particularly rewarding to be recognised by the franchisor as it’s judged on our ability to run the salon to the franchisor’s highest standards. We set new goals at the beginning of the 2008 financial year and we’ve exceeded much higher than the initial benchmark,” says Monica Longmire.
“Winning the Just Cuts franchise of the year award was a complete shock to us. To be a finalist in the awards is an honour but to win is a great accomplishment. Credit must go to our amazing stylists who provide the superb service that Just Cuts is renowned for,” says John Longmire.

John and Monica are not new to the franchising world. Monica was appointed as John’s successor on the Australian Competition Consumers Commission’s Franchising Consultative Panel and their efforts have been recognised by the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA). In 1998 and 1999 they won the FCA NSW Franchise of the Year award and in 1999 they won the FCA Australian Franchise of the Year award, competing against thousands of other franchises nationally. In 2004, Monica won the FCA Women in Franchising award and was the ACT Telstra Businesswoman of the Year. As prestigious as these awards are, Monica and John agree that winning Just Cuts Franchise Business of the Year is their best achievement yet.
Monica and John have been involved with Just Cuts since 1994, purchasing the first Just Cuts salon to be located outside the Sydney metropolitan area. They have owned five salons over the past 14 years and currently own Just Cuts Woden and Belconnen. Their plans are to expand Just Cuts’ presence in Canberra and are endeavouring to open more salons over the next two years.
“We encourage all of our stylists to treat others as they would like to be treated. This approached has helped us to grow and reach new levels. We have exceptionally low staff turnover and provide continual training courses and incentives as well as the odd party here and there, of course!” says John Longmire.

- Pinpoint the exact location of suppliers and potential customers.
And of course, you can also have a little fun … you know you want to check out your own home, and maybe the house you lived in when you were a kid ...
