ALBURY OPENING FOR COLD ROCK ICE CREAMERY - ROCKIN’ AND ROLLING TO SUCCESS

The 100 per cent Australian owned Cold Rock Ice Creamery business is on target to become the number one ice cream franchise nationally within two years.  Earlier this year, it celebrated the 67th store opening at 1/453 Dean St. Albury.

The former independent ice cream store is run by Brett and Tania Harvey, and Paul Jones.

Established six years ago, Cold Rock, headquartered on the Gold Coast, has a ‘create your own flavour- choose it, mix, it, smash it’ theme catering largely to the 15-35 demographic. Group sales have increased 28 per cent in the last financial year.

Cold Rock is the fastest growing ice cream franchise in the country with a total of ten more stores scheduled to open nationally this year.

According to co-franchisor John Booth: “We don’t quite view other brands as direct competition as Cold Rock offers a different product and a unique experience.  The brand promise is based on a concept of ice cream mixed with either lollies, chocolates or fruit in a fun way in front of the customer and prepared on refrigerated granite rock.

Cold Rock’s award winning all Australian premium quality ice cream is made in-store.  “The location of each Cold Rock store is a customer’s destination point rather than an impulse or passing trade type site.  The sites are predominantly in strip shopping areas or near to restaurant clusters,” Booth explained.

“Part of the success of Cold Rock is the customer excitement phenomenon that evokes such passion.  Marketers refer to the brand as a ‘love mark’ because it touches the heart.”

Booth and his co-franchisor Norm Hunt, who each own 50 per cent of the business, sing from the same business philosophy songsheet.  From the early 1990’s, they were successful franchisees in the video industry in Perth.  “Success didn’t happen by accident for us,” Booth said.  “Our focus is the critically important stuff at the business pointy end – supporting franchisees and keeping customers happy.  One of the keys is having suppliers and best practice providers in proven strategic alliances dealing nationally and directly with our franchises on all the back-end issues.  Cold Rock’s administrative team supports our franchisees in cultivating and building better businesses and delivering great experiences to our customers.”

As a benchmarking tool, Cold Rock uses independent professional mystery shoppers to monitor presentation and act as a connector with customers in order to ascertain the levels of service delivery etc.

Cold Rock is also a leader in its field in terms of the environment.  The franchisor company has been accepted and registered (through the Carbon Reduction Institute’s NoCO2 approval process) as a carbon neutral business.  It is believed to be the first national franchisor in Australia to achieve this status.

RBA WEIGHS DOWN CONSUMERS WITH FURTHER RISE
- ARA predicts small retailers to be hit hard

Peak retail industry body the ARA expressed concern for Australia’s smaller retailers and chains at the RBA’s action to raise the official cash rate this week by 25 basis points to 7.25 percent.

After publicly stating last month that post-Christmas sales estimates show consumers are already restricting their spend, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) believes the interest rate rise will hit small retailers and chain stores hard on two fronts.

ARA’s Executive Director Richard Evans said the retail sector is already feeling the pinch with a reduction in demand and this latest rate rise will be felt almost immediately in daily takings for smaller retailers.

Add this to the increased cost in finance funding, and small business all over Australia will now suffer. We expect the November rate rise to have an impact now and today’s rate rise to have an impact in four months time. We are moving beyond the peak of growth and we are expecting growth but on a reduced scale this year (5.5% vs 7.6% last year),” Evans said.
