News in Franchising:

Hotondo Homes Awarded Excellence in Franchising

At the recent Franchise Council of Australia Conference, Hotondo Homes was awarded the Judges Recognition Award for Excellence in Franchising for 2007.

Hotondo Homes' Managing Director, Michael Renwick, said: "To be recognised by both the judges and our peers as ‘excellent’ means much to all of us at the Support Office.

Franchising is difficult at the best part of the times but it is also very rewarding. To achieve this award we have had to struggle in an industry that does not yet fully understand or appreciate franchising.

Much of the time we learn from experience but we have also received enormous inspiration and support from great people in great companies; Forty Winks, Autobarn, Fernwood, Clark Rubber, BathroomWerx, Snowgum, Beacon Lighting and Quest Apartments are some the companies that have helped us with strategies, systems, tips and encouragement.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the great team at our Support Office. Together we have worked to make Hotondo Homes great. Sometimes it is tough and thankless, but most of the time we have fun doing our best for our franchisees.

Finally we thank the franchisees that make up our membership. To state the obvious, we would be nothing without you."

Inside Franchising congratulates Hotondo Homes on their success!

FCA appoints new Executive Director

Communications industry executive and consultant Steve Wright has been appointed to head Australia’s peak franchising sector representative group, the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA).

FCA Chairman John O’Brien said Steve’s experience in industry advocacy and stakeholder relations, including government relations, on the national level over the past 15 years made him a strong fit for the FCA.

“In Steve, we have secured a high calibre candidate from a strong field of applicants, with well-rounded skills to help take us to the next level of professionalism, representation and member service delivery,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We are very excited about what Steve brings to the FCA. He has a breadth of experience in big and small business and at senior levels of other industry representative groups,” Mr O’Brien said.

“He knows from personal experience the challenges of small business and new business ventures and he understands the importance of translating that experience to the legislative and regulatory areas of Government, which can have such a profound impact on business.”

Wright replaces former CEO Richard Evans, who has taken up a role with another industry representative body.

Wright’s most recent role was as Director (Communications) with Gavin Anderson & Company, one of the nation’s leading corporate and government relations consultancies.

Prior to joining Gavin Anderson, he was Director, Stakeholder Relations, at Hutchison Telecoms, the operator of the Orange and 3 mobile phone services in Australia and overseas. Prior to that, he was Director of Public Affairs for Optus and SingTel Optus.

With over 15 years of experience in stakeholder relations, including investor and government relations and regulatory affairs, Wright started his new role with the FCA on 8 January 2008.

Franchising in Australia represents a dynamic and entrepreneurial small business sector contributing $128 billion to the Australian economy, with franchisees employing some 600,000 Australians within over 72, 000 workplaces. The FCA is the only national representative body for this large and important sector of the economy.

DECADE STRONG CHRISTMAS SPEND

Peak retail industry body the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) said the 2007 Christmas period exceeded expectations with cash registers across the country ringing with $36.5 billion in retail sales.

According to ARA Executive Director Richard Evans although the figures are in line with original projections, expectations for the 2007 Christmas period were lowered to $35.4 billion after the interest rate rise in November.

“Retail sales from mid-November to Christmas eve are up 7.4% on last year, making it the largest increase in close on a decade,” Evans said.

On a state basis, NSW sales accounted for $12.1 billion (33%), Victoria $8.8 billion (24%), Queensland $7.4 billion (20%), WA $4.1 billion (11%) SA $2.6 billion (7 %), Tasmania $747 million (2%), ACT $395 million (1%), NT $390 million (1%).

“Obviously consumer confidence is still high across Australia and recent interest rate rises, which have perhaps been offset by recent tax cuts, did not dampen consumer spending over the Christmas period.

“Many home owners are also ahead of their mortgage payments thus reducing potential impact of the Christmas spend. We also don’t see petrol prices affecting retail sales over this period,” Evans said.

Key categories included food ($13.5 billion), household / entertainment ($5.3 billion), hospitality ($5.1 billion), department stores ($3.6 billion), clothing and footwear ($2.5 billion) and recreational ($1.7 billion).

“Retailers love their cash registers ringing loud and often. However, with the post-Christmas sales continuing until mid January we once again caution consumers to be realistic when it comes to discretionary spending and not to extend too far on credit.

“Right now we are at the top of the cycle when it comes to consumer spending, but if consumers rely too heavily on credit, it could be a very difficult time in February when the bills come in,” Evans said.
