News in Franchising:

Worldwide Snaps-up Perth Writing Team

Print communications group Worldwide Online Printing has acquired Perth-based professional writing business Wordplay Media in a share-for-share deal.

The moved completed a busy end to ‘07 for Worldwide that saw it invest almost $5m in two state-of-the-art production hubs – and celebrate having Australia’s National Franchisee of The Year within its network of 82 design and print Centre owners. Worldwide is also based in WA.

Wordplay was created by British crime journalist Paul Sowerby who came to Australia almost two years ago to plug a gap in the communications sector for professional copywriting and editing services. Since then, his team of six have written over a million words for clients ranging from BankWest and the RAC, to Alinta and GESB (the Government Employees Superannuation Board).

Assignments have ranged from optimised web copy to radio scripts, slogans, interactive games, email text and operations manuals. Worldwide had been a client for six months prior to the acquisition.

For Worldwide, the strategic acquisition means its Centre owners can add words to their core design and print proposition. For Wordplay, being part of Australia’s fastest-growing print group* means its writers can offer their services to Worldwide’s 15,000 customers.

“We’ve had an amazing couple of years, but growing a small business from a WA base is challenging,” said Sowerby. “In Worldwide we have a conduit through which to extend the reach of our services into the media heartlands over East, and offer their print Centres a logical product extension and lucrative new revenue stream.”

Worldwide CEO Mark Manderson said the acquisition made a lot of sense at a time when Worldwide was looking for innovative new ways to expand its network and add new print-related activities and disciplines.

“As a major Wordplay client we’ve had a chance to see for ourselves just how important the written word is to our print clients,” he said. “It’s one of the pivotal elements of the communication mix and it seemed very sensible to formalise the working arrangements so that we can move forward with our rapid growth plans.”

Gleaming car, clear conscience for Christmas

If you’re struggling to find something for your favourite car lover that has every gadget and part already, here’s a Christmas present they’ll adore: A gleaming set of wheels, a well earned rest over the festive break and the knowledge of doing their bit for the environment.

ecowash mobile gift vouchers are a fantastic Christmas gift for friends, family and business associates. The completely waterless mobile car washing and detailing service comes directly to home or office and saves around 180 litres of water per wash compared to traditional methods. To date they have saved more than 28 million litres in Australia alone.

Using a 2 in 1 process that encapsulates dirt particles and prevents swirl marks unlike traditional methods, an ecowash cleans and polishes, leaving a protective coating that lasts for four to six weeks. As well as not using water, the products are biodegradable, making the process completely eco-friendly.

In 2006 the franchise was awarded the ‘Smart Approved Watermark’, the nation’s reference for choosing products, services and organisations that are reducing outdoor water use.  ecowash mobile also won the 2007 Australian Business Award for Enterprise, in its industry category. The award acknowledges the automotive industry franchise system as an industry leader and honours its contributions to the industry as a whole.

A basic ecowash starts at $35 and includes exterior wash and polish, wheels and windows as well as tyre dressing. If you really want to spoil that someone special, the ‘extreme ecowash’ from $120  goes over every inch of your car, right down to the boot and door jams, and brings it back to life! All bugs and tar are removed, bumpers renovated, the interior spotless and deodorised.

ecowash mobile gift vouchers are available online on www.ecowash.com.au or by calling 1800 ECOWASH (1 800 326 927).
