Young Cerebral Palsy sufferer brings four-legged hero home
Twelve months ago, nine-year-old Cerebral Palsy sufferer, Liam Siltala received some news that would change his life – through the help of Specialist Dog Trainers Craig and Tracey Murray, Variety Club and Aussie Pooch Mobile, Liam was eligible to receive a fully trained assistance dog.
“I was so excited when Craig and Tracey bought along Tom, a trained assistance dog, to my school and showed us what sort of things a trained dog could do. Best of all I was able to meet Hero, a nine-week-old assistance puppy. Hero could be mine once he was fully trained in 12 months,” said Liam
But a fully-trained assistance dog doesn’t come cheap, costing in excess of $25,000. That’s where Aussie Pooch Mobile plays a major role in this story and for the past 12 months has been tirelessly raising money for Variety Queensland to bring ‘Hero’ home for Liam.
On April 15, Liam’s 10th birthday, he finally got to take his mate Hero home and a little boy’s life was forever changed.
“I’m so happy about finally taking Hero home,” says Liam. “Having Hero will help me become more confident and build my independence. He will help me make friends and needing to talk to him will encourage my speech. It would help my mum and dad because Hero will be able to help dress me, get me things and even turn the lights off and on. If I was to need help Hero will even go and get Mum or Dad.”
And Woody Point Special School at Redcliffe has a new enrolment, as Liam is now taking Hero to school with him.
