Brumby’s Mackay has been voted the best bakery in North Queensland at the baking industry’s night of nights, the 2008 Queensland Baking Industry Regional Bakery Awards.
The 16th annual awards ceremony celebrates Queensland’s finest apprentices, bakers and bakeries.
Proving its excellence in store presentation and service, Brumby’s Mackay won first prize in the North Queensland division of the state awards.
Brumby’s Mackay manager Shayne Lawrie said she was thrilled to win such a prestigious industry award.
“We were absolutely stoked when we heard - it was a mix between disbelief and excitement,” she said.
“From merchandising and quality assurance to service, we work so hard to ensure our store presentation and customer service is 100% perfect every day.
|
“Our customers mean the world to us. We have lots of regulars, some who visit us seven days a week.
“We have a great repour with our customers. We are constantly seeking their feedback, and if there is something they think should be improved we see to it immediately.”
Ms Lawrie’s partner Graham Pratt and his brother John co-own the Mackay bakery.
“It’s a family affair here at Brumby’s Mackay,” Ms Lawrie said.
“My partner co-owns the bakery with his brother John, and John’s wife Gail manages the shop with me. Gail and John’s son is an apprentice baker with us, and even my daughter comes in to help out a few days of the week.”
“We have an incredible team here at Brumby’s Mackay, and we couldn’t have won this award without them.”
Brumby’s operates more than 300 stores across Australia, employing over 3,600 staff and serving over 360,000 loaves of bread to more than 780,000 Australians a week. Brumby’s is owned and managed by Retail Food Group (RFG), a leading Australian retail food brand manager and franchisor.

Queensland based Big Dad’s Pies continues to expand their retail offer with the opening of their 39th store at the St Ives Shopping Centre Goodna, west of Brisbane.
Big Dad’s Pies CEO Stephen Donnelly said: “Big Dad’s Pies continues to experience strong growth and demand for our “biggest and the best” range of pies, pastries and cakes. Our growth is attributed to our premium quality range of products developed by “Big Dad” over 50 years. Big Dad’s Pies use only 95% fat free Aussie beef in all our pies, making having a pie a good choice.“
|
Franchisees for the St Ives store Robert Thompson and Steven Grant said, “We are excited to be part of the Big Dad’s Pies franchise system. We understand that people are looking for quality products, range, convenience, and friendly service, and the Big Dad’s Pies system meets all these requirements. That’s why we chose to invest in a Big Dad’s Pies store of our own.
Commencing in 2002, Big Dads Pies now have stores located from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and Toowoomba, and a single site currently located in Tasmania. Big Dad’s Pies are actively seeking new franchises and locations to take our products to more Australians.

Local business owners Michael and Linda Robinson have just been announced as the winners of Wendy’s highest accolade – the National Franchisee of the Year.
Wendy’s Yepoon beat 300 other stores across the country to win the honour and Michael and Linda were presented with the award by Wendy’s Chief Executive Officer, Nicola Milne.
“It was a fantastic surprise to hear that we had won the national award,” Linda said.
“I love running this business and we put a lot of time and effort into making sure that the whole team enjoys coming to work every day. I strongly believe that if you enjoy what you’re doing, then you can do well at it – and that has certainly been our experience.
“There’s a fine balance between having fun and making sure you get the job done so, as much as we focus on enjoying work, the whole team is also very focused on ensuring our customers, and standard of customer service, is always a priority.”
The National Franchisee of the Year award isn’t the only accolade the Yepoon store received – Linda and her team also won Wendy’s Operational Excellence Award as well as the State Franchisee of the Year award for Queensland.
"We get a lot of support from Wendy’s head office as well as from our Business Consultant, Karen Bourke, and that has certainly helped us to achieve some of our goals,” Linda said.
“My husband and I also work very well together – Michael is in a wheelchair so he handles all our accounts and I work behind the counter so we’re a great team.” |

According to Ms Milne, who is on a national tour to announce Wendy’s annual performance awards, Linda and Michael are a great asset to the Wendy’s franchise.
“The whole Wendy’s Yepoon team are to be congratulated – Linda and Michael have only owned the business for three-and-a-half years so to have won the national award already is a huge achievement,” Ms Milne said.
“Our franchisees work extremely hard throughout the year so these awards are all about rewarding them and recognising their dedication.”
Established 28 years ago, Wendy’s is one of Australia and New Zealand’s most successful franchises.
There are 300 Wendy’s stores across Australia and New Zealand putting smiles on the faces of half-a-million consumers every week.

bb’s cafe Werribee Plaza has received a flashy facelift, with the popular coffee shop reopening and launching its new look in Hoppers Crossing last weekend.
Located at Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre, the café has increased its capacity by 50%, now seating around 120 local diners. It is expected to make up to 2,500 coffees a week, using more than 25kg of coffee beans.
bb’s café Werribee Plaza owners Judy & Stephen Goss said the cafe’s new design would provide shoppers with the perfect place to relax and recharge, while enjoying a five star meal.
“Apart from its dynamic and eye-catching design, the revamped cafe will feature a larger outdoor seating area and an enhanced menu, without losing the relaxed atmosphere of its traditional coffee shop ambience,” Mrs Goss said.
“Enjoy a plate of tantalising fish, chips and salad, chicken parmigiana or sample a selection of your favourite antipasto delights or indulge in some of our fresh sweet treats with the perfect espresso.”
Wyndham residents, the Gosses met in high school in a small town called St Arnaud in regional Victoria over 30 years ago.
“My husband and I met when we were just 14 years old, and this year marks our 27th wedding anniversary,” Mrs Goss said.
I worked in banking for over a decade before Stephen and I decided to take the plunge and invest in our own bb’s cafe franchise five years ago. I now manage the day-to-day operation of the business, while Stephen, who has maintained a full-time management role outside our own business, concentrates primarily on our business’ strategy and direction.
