The first Fernwood Women's Health Club was established in 1989 when Diana Williams recognized the importance for women to have their own special space to enjoy regular exercise and reach their health and fitness goals. Women flocked to the club because Fernwood offered what they wanted: a safe, secure, supportive environment where they could exercise, slim down, and learn about healthy nutrition and weight management.

The concept was developed around the specific needs of women, through member focus groups and questionnaires, to identify what women wanted in a Club. The result is reflected in Fernwood's purpose statement which is to 'empower women to shine'

The enormous popularity of the concept inspired the decision to franchise in 1994.

Such was the success that in 2000 Fernwood was ranked by the business magazine, BRW , as being the eighth fastest growing private company in Australia.

Further developments have resulted in a weight management program, 'Slimplicity', and Fernwood Personal Training (FPT). Strategic branding and marketing efforts have contributed to the growth of the company including an in-house member magazine called Fernwood.

To further support this growth, Fernwood's operations and franchise system management have implemented training and development practices to coach, guide and support franchisees and new Clubs as they come on board.

In 2005, the company's performance was further recognized with our founder, Diana Williams, being named Telstra Business Woman of the Year.
