NEWSAGENCY CHAIN CONTINUES GROWTH MOMENTUM

Supanews Logo

Supanews refits and franchises Strathpine Newsagency

Supanews Retail Pty Ltd has unveiled its latest concept newsagency in Westfield Strathpine. The newly configured store now is one of the largest greeting card retailers in Brisbane, along with an excellent range of magazines, stationery and gifts.

Supanews purchased the existing Strathpine newsagency in 2008 and spent some time analysing local sales trends and customer demands in order to create the best targeted product range and layout to the local market.

Upon unveiling the new look shop, the business was franchised to local operators Peter and Donna Griffiths, who enthused that they were “excited about the opportunity to partner with Supanews during the network’s exciting growth phase. We expect to experience strong growth in this newly configured state due to superior layout, store design improvements, improved product ranges and marketing initiatives.”

Supanews’ Managing Director, Adrian Gaskin, says that he is encouraged by the milestone, as it “demonstrates the appeal of a professional, compliant and modern newsagency brand which services consumer needs and provides a shopping centre with an identifiable national tenant”. He went on to note that “Supanews continues to achieve great momentum despite the global economic crisis. Over 40% of our businesses have transitioned to new franchise owners over the past twelve months, amounting to $8.7 Million worth of transactions.

The Supanews acquisition model is working, as it provides new franchisees an opportunity to purchase on an existing business’ turnover and profit.” Along with this track record of acquiring existing newsagency businesses and converting them to Supanews outlets, Supanews also opens Greenfield sites in new and developed shopping Centres. Combined with a superior shopfit and ‘best in class’ practices, the model appeals to customers, Landlords and franchisees alike. Supanews Retail is Australia’s most professional and successful newsagency retailer. All stores in the chain are compliant, professional and offer consistent brand identity incorporating world-class shop layout and design.

The company’s objective is to grow the business to 100 stores within the next two years. In October 2006, Supanews entered a joint venture with RedGroup Retal Pty Limited (RedGroup) to operate the Supanews network. RedGroup operate the Angus & Robertson bookstore chain (over 170 locations in Australia), the stationery and book retailer Whitcoulls (70 stores in New Zealand), Borders Bookstores and casual lease retailer Calendar Club.

Supanews has stores in Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria and operates corporate and franchised businesses. Its network turnover is in excess of $130 million per annum and the business expects to open its 60th store by Q2 2010. Supanews is currently looking for new sites and acquisitions across Australia.

NEWCASTLE FRANCHISE MEETS LOCAL DEMAND

Local franchisees excited to commence trading as the new faces of Jumping J-Jays in Newcastle

In November, Jumping J-Jays Castles & Slides will commence trading in Newcastle after 12 months of growing local demand for jumping castles and no Jumping J-Jays franchise. Now the wait is over, and Jumping J-Jays is once again open in Newcastle!

Jumping J-Jays is a growing business of local Mums and Dads delivering children’s jumping castles to backyard parties and events across Australia and has recently expanded into the US market.

Proud Jumping J-Jays franchisee, Caleb Davis, is anticipating a successful start to his business and is looking forward to meeting other families in their community through this fun franchise service.

“I’m excited to have bookings already in our system and I haven’t even started yet! I can’t wait to get out there and start meeting families and seeing the kid’s excitement when we arrive with their jumping castle,” Caleb said.

The variety of inflatables available for hire includes traditional castles and combos in themes appealing to both boys and girls. Jumping J-Jays range of exclusive, patented models include Actives and the new Falling Floor, both featuring the latest in inflatable amusement technology.

Jumping J-Jays Founder and Franchisor Mr John Newton said how exciting it is to have motivated franchisees servicing this growing area once again. “It’s wonderful bringing on franchisees who aren’t afraid to get out there and meet their community and provide locals with a standard of service that is not often found in this industry, ” Mr Newton said.

Jumping J-Jays is the largest inflatable amusement company in the world and is the industry leader in safety technology. With 40 franchises across Australia and the US, Jumping J-Jays services more than 50,000 parties annually. Franchisees are locals who are committed to providing excellence in service and giving back to their community through various sponsorship programs.

WOOLWORTHS REMEDIES ACCC CONCERNS WITH HARDWARE ACQUISITION

ACCC FEATURE

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will not oppose the proposed acquisition of Danks Holdings Limited by Woolworths Limited and its joint venture partner, Lowe's, after accepting court enforceable undertakings from the joint venture parties.

Woolworths and Lowe's, a United States home improvement retailer, plan to develop a network of company-owned 'big box' home improvement stores as part of the joint venture’s entry into the hardware sector, in competition with other retailers including Bunnings.

As an aspect of this plan, the joint venture proposes to acquire Danks, a wholesale distributor of hardware products and related services to independent retailers, including those trading under the Home Hardware and Thrifty-Link banners.  This acquisition was the subject of an ACCC review.

The ACCC had concerns about the effect of the proposed acquisition on competition between hardware retailers. In particular, the ACCC was concerned that the joint venture could discriminate against some of its wholesale customers, namely hardware retailers supplied by Danks, who would also be its retail competitors.

As a result, the ACCC has accepted court enforceable undertakings from the joint venture in order to address these concerns.

"With these undertakings in place the ACCC considers the proposed acquisition unlikely to result in a substantial lessening of competition," ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said today.

"The undertakings importantly impose requirements that will lower barriers that independent hardware stores supplied by Danks otherwise faced in switching to alternative suppliers,” he said.

Additionally, the joint venture has accepted obligations that alleviate concerns that Danks stores in close proximity to joint venture big box stores would be treated less favourably than other Danks stores.

The undertaking will be available on the ACCC's website and the ACCC will shortly issue a Public Competition Assessment explaining the reasons for its decision.

30% of new franchisees recruited online

Results from a Franchisor Expansion Study by 10 Thousand Feet into the Australian franchising industry reports the following:

  • Just 10 per cent of Australian franchisors reported negative growth in 2008
  • Despite this, the $40 million plus franchisors spend on marketing each year to attract new franchisees will be significantly cut in 2009
  • Newspaper ad revenues will be one of the areas to suffer most, with just 11 per cent of new franchise leads generated through this medium in 2008 – down from 18 per cent in 2007.

In contrast, online and word of mouth recruitment strategies are set to grow with 29 per cent of new franchisees were recruited via word of mouth in 2008, and 30 per cent of new franchisees recruited via online avenues!
