Edition #174 of The Insider

Welcome to the 174th Edition of The Insider!

Today we introduce a new business opportunity, Health Protect International, a Gold Coast based business that specialises in carpet and mattress cleaning.  Their business model is based on thorough and comprehensive training and the provision of a guaranteed number of leads. It is an interesting model and provides operators with a level of comfort about levels of income and potential margins.

We also celebrate with Just Cuts – who are 20 Years young – and wonder how Denis McFadden, the founder of Just Cuts can stay looking so young. Check out photos from the celebration evening – as well the youthful – and still youthful Denis!  We also congratulate Jumping J-Jays on continuing to move forward with new Franchises opening up in NSW.

In our Movers and Shakers we profile Chiree Craig, National Business Development Manager, from Just Cuts.  Chiree has the job of driving Just Cuts forward by finding the right Franchisees and the right locations for their stores.

In this week’s Quick Shots we highlight recent actions by the ACCC and some interesting actions by some Franchisors in the light of the changes to the Franchising Code of Conduct as well as review the business environment facing retail and service franchises.  Also in Quick Shots we profile a new franchise operating in the New England area of NSW – dealing in home delivered fruit and veg.

Please enjoy.

CONGRATULATIONS - DENIS McFADDEN AND JUST CUTS

20 Years and still growing!

Just Cuts celebrated their 20th Anniversary in style on July 16 at Daltone House Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney.

The first Just Cuts™ Franchise opened in 1990, 20 years ago in Engadine, Sydney.

Hairdresser and CEO/Founder Denis McFadden in fact says, “Amazingly our first Franchisee is still with us today. Back then we created a whole new niche in the market place. There was nobody offering just a Style Cut and clients would literally fall in the door. Today due to us closing that market gap we sit between a Barber and a high end salon, so there are naturally copy cats increasing the competition”. We now have 174 salons, a 2.6% market share and plenty of Franchisee enquiries. We are the biggest hairdressing group in the southern hemisphere and do over 65,000 Style Cuts™ per week. Just Cuts™ employ over 1,500 stylists in Australia and New Zealand plus stylists at one salon in India.

We have been utilising more science to measure ourselves as a group and to enable Franchisees to compare their performance across the group. Financial reporting isn’t as mandatory for us as we don’t work off percentages –  we are just twelve haircuts a week. This method means some of our Franchise owners have become independently wealthy and we all share a pretty good relationship.

Our vision has always been the goal of 200 salons, plus continue with our Global expansion. Just Cuts™ have selected an advisory Board to assist us in achieving our goal. Now we are the biggest hairdressing group we truly want to be “the best”. Every day over 9000 people find the easy way to look good with Just Cuts™ - their satisfaction is our professions greatest reward.

FITNESS FIRST PRICING CAUSES CONCERN AT THE ACCC

During January and February 2010 Fitness First displayed posters at its clubs advertising its "Gold Coin to Join" promotion.  The ACCC considered that these posters did not comply with the law as they failed to state a total single price.

As part of the undertaking Fitness First has agreed to continue its FFit program for teenagers for six months until 30 November 2010 at an estimated cost of $225,000. FFit is a Fitness First initiative to address the obesity issue amongst school aged children.

Fitness First has also undertaken to publish a corrective notice on its website and in its Fitness First magazine, and will implement a trade practices law compliance program.

EVEN THOUGH THE TERMS OF TRADE ARE POSITIVE ... SMALL BUSINESS CAN STILL BE DOING IT TOUCH ...

Peter Switzer, well known business commentator, has identified that small business is really not out of the woods yet.  He has identified the following factors contributing to their situation: the increases in interest rates, the stagnation in retail spending (growth during June being only 0.2%), and a decline in the service index.

TASTI D-LITE ... IS IT COMING TO AUSTRALIA ...

Yet another American franchise is targeting Australia, with frozen yoghurt chain Tasti D-Lite sending out representatives to Sydney and Melbourne to examine the possibility of opening locations in major cities.

The announcement comes after a slew of American retailors have targeted Australia, including clothing chain Gap which intends to open its first store August 26, in order to escape the sluggish American retail environment.

Annette Ahern at the US Consulate General's office says the franchise is hoping to leverage its emphasis on being a healthy dessert alternative to crack into the Australian market, which already has its fair share of yoghurt and ice cream chains.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE IN A FOOD BUSINESS ... THAT IS NOT FRANCHISED?

In the Franchising world  we hear about the importance of “the system”, the importance of “key processes”, the need for uniformity and the peace of mind and power that this gives to new franchisees.  Well what is it like not to have this degree of comfort.  Well, it a lot of plain hard work where you are all things and you do all things.  There are 40,000 retail food businesses in Australia employing less than 20 people. The life is hard, the hours are long and you can make a go of it – if you follow some very precise set of guidelines.  This article by Morris Kaplan takes you through some of those fundamentals – and might make you realise why you have chosen a franchised model!

CHANGES TO THE FRANCHISING CODE SEE FRANCHISOR'S SEEKING APPROVAL

Changes to the Franchising Code of Conduct see Franchisors lodging requests with the ACCC to change their agreements with Franchisees.

Over the last couple of months Franchisors have been seeking ACCC approval to require Franchisees to purchase nominated products, use nominated products and use nominated suppliers.  While these changes for the most part are procedural to ensure that Franchisors are conforming to the new code, it could also be a shake up for those Franchisees that might have been under the impression that they have had a degree of freedom in choosing their suppliers.
