INSIDE FRANCHISING: GOOGLE'S #1 FOR FRANCHISING NEWS !
Delivering franchising news and opportunities since 2005 |
Edition #172 of The Insider
Welcome to the New Financial Year!
With the start of a new year, we would also like to introduce you to a new style of newsletter and a new and improved website. We hope you like the cleaner, more user friendly layout and style. Check us out at www.insidefranchising.com.au.
Just in case you haven't noticed ... we are about to have an election (as of today pundits are talking about a mid-August poll.) With both major parties trying to claim the right, centre and left of the politician spectrum we can expect 'visions', 'policies', 'promises' and pronouncements to be in coming thick and fast. Let us just hope that in the hurly burly of the campaign that both major parties keep the small and medium businesses firmly in the forefront of their minds.
However, Julia Gillard has not started well by renouncing Kevin Rudd's plan to drop Company Tax to 28%. Details of her move can be found in our “Quickshots News”. Meanwhile, Tony Abbott is promising to create a 'Small Business Ombudsman'. With details still scarce and the possibility of increasing Government interference with business to business contracts, more will need to be understood about this initiative before a view can really be formed.
Meanwhile, Franchisors and Franchisees are doing their best. See their stories below. Trios, the Melbourne-based healthy food franchise is firming up overseas whilst SafetyQuip is adding new products to its offerings; Plan Ahead Events is expanding into Sydney, and Sign-a-Rama is moving their business on-line by the creation of an on-line design and ordering system – that is complemented by a pick up from their local franchisee. This is the perfect combination of clicks and bricks! And new Franchises are emerging each month. Check out the franchise that replaces your old fashioed rubbish skip with a giant disposable rubbish bag.
Until next time, all the best,
Michael and the Team at Inside Franchising

TRIOS ON THE PATH TO A NEW LOOK |

Trios 360 – a Path with an Attitude
Meet the ‘laffe’ (pronounced lah-fey) – Trios proprietary flat bread that has transformed the way Australia perceives wraps. Trios is, after all, Australia's largest wraps franchise – which means that they know a thing or two about loading their signature flat bread with freshly grilled meats, fresh vegetables and proprietary dressings. And the only thing they take seriously - our promise (of course) that they will serve consumers exceptional flavour profiles in an extensive range of wraps, baked spuds and tossed salads that indulge the senses and taste absolutely amazing.
Trios has been around since 2002, and take pride in the fact that being born in Melbourne, are Australian in spirit yet multi cultural in sensibility. Their multi cultural appeal and proprietary flavor profiles has allowed them to successfully launch stores in USA and the Middle East. But not content with world domination, Trios is now busy working on what we call Trios 360.
Based on extensive research, and in essence, listening to consumers, Trios realize that ‘instant gratification’ in a ‘personable yet personal environment’, is what consumers look for – even in a brand shared surrounding like food courts or multi brand food precincts. Trios 360 is a detailed analysis and subsequent implementation of what their consumers have ‘told’ them over the past 18 months – how they feel about our Trios’ food and how they can connect to them more. Trios feel that it is imperative that they create an ambience, where their consumer can not only emotionally relate to the brand but also reflect the young, trendy and urbane attitude that Trios is synonymous with, while enjoying a level of comfort in what could best be described as a ‘me moment’. Hence Trios are in the process of completing their rebranding project, which has mapped and examined every customer touch point (down to the basics of packaging) – and have consequently incorporated a deeper, earthier color palette and an array of finishes that Trios feels can be aptly expressed as ‘grunge chic’.
Appealing to Gen X and Gen Y, Trios’ new interiors and technologically advanced consumer interaction points will ensure global appeal as they aggressively expand the brand overseas (currently we are continuing expansion in USA and have started R&D for pilot stores in both China and the UK). Based on extensive consumer profiling, Trios are in the process of refreshing some of their taste profiles and menu offerings to echo the expectations and preferences of their core target demographic (Trios takes pride in their ability to innovate and adjust their taste contours – which is imperative to ensure success – especially considering the magnitude of international franchise enquiries they have been receiving).
Over the next six months, Trios will be refurbishing 4 existing Victoria locations to reflect their new branding. They are in the process of building two new locations in Houston, Texas and their brand image in USA is in line with their revised brand archetype. Over the next 12 months, 8 stores in Saudi Arabia will also be renovated to be consistent with their revised branding.
So what country will Trios colonize next? What colour palette and finishes will their new stores reflect? Which artist are they going to feature on their new website?
“Watch this space” and all will be revealed soon!

RETAILERS ADVISED TO GET EXPERT WAGES ADVICE |
ARA advises retailers to get expert wage advice - Fair Work retail visits are happening now
The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has advised retailers to get compliant with new award wage payments that came into play last week before they are visited by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
"The new retail award is already in operation, so if retailers haven't already sought advice from their employer association about new hourly rates, casual loadings, penalties and allowances, they need to do so now.
"With the Fair Work Ombudsman out and about targeting the retail sector with visits to over 1500 randomly selected stores across the country, retailers need to be on the front foot.
"The five-year incremental transition between old state-based awards and the modern award system, also taking into account the new minimum wage, is a highly complex process and for retailers to be certain they are complying with new wage laws they should be seeking expert help.
"To manage retail demand for wage advice throughout the transitional period and to help retailers avoid time-consuming and complicated manual calculations, ARA has developed up-to-date and comprehensive online wage transition tools that set out: which classification from the old awards relate to specific new award classification; wage-rate obligations for every state and territory by classification; every type of allowance, loading and penalty for every retail wage category in the General Retail Industry Award; and frequently asked questions with worked examples.

Gillard Revises Company Tax
Speaking in Mackay on July 3, Julia Gillard the recently installed new Prime Minister, announced that a previous undertaking to reduce the company tax rate to 28% had been scrapped and replaced with a 29% company tax rate.
The impact of this will be felt most strongly on those small to medium businesses that are emerging from their ‘break even’ phase into their profit making phase.
She went on to say, “Well, I think for small business there are great benefits in this package. They will see the reduction in company tax early. They will experience the benefit of being able to get a new tax concession for the capital equipment that they need. You know, setting up a restaurant or running a restaurant and you need new furniture. If you've got a small business and you need new tools and equipment there will be special tax benefits for you. And as we talk about the superannuation changes, this is really important to working Australians. But we understood that businesses including small businesses would need time to adjust, so the changes are being phased in slowly over time to enable people to adjust.” |
Small business Ombudsman?
Tony Abbott has indicated that intends to "put small business concerns at the heart of government consideration" with his proposal to establish a Small Business Ombudsman on his list of promises for sme's.

Is Social Media part of
your marketing strategy?
If it isn’t then you had better keep reading…
If you thought that modern marketing was about pushing your product into people’s faces…you might need to think again, Richard Binhammer Dell’s expert on social marketing told his audience at a Small Business Seminar in Brisbane.
‘It’s about listening to what they have to say, going where your customers are, learning from them constantly,’’ he says.
‘‘I think the reddest, hottest thing about social media is that in fact it allows you to connect more strongly, in a more real way.’’
Binhammer said the technology company had clear strategies on using tools such as Facebook and Twitter for marketing.
‘‘Listen to your customers, go where they are. It’s about listening to what they have to say...learning from them constantly.’’
He says Dell delivers news, information and sales offers, but only to their customers who have asked for it.

Eagle Boys Aims High
Eagle Boys Pizza plans to open an additional 46 stores across Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald reported this week that this expansion follows a massive advertising campaign begun in March of this year. According to the SMH, Eagle Boys Pizza managing director Todd Clayton said high levels of inquiries from potential franchisees and underrepresentation in major capital cities meant the company would continue to roll out a high number of new stores in the coming years. The 46 new stores to be opened in 2010 and 2011 would be concentrated in the Sydney and Adelaide Markets.
